2018 Finals: that's gonna be a "no" from me, dog
I’ll sit this one out. For the fourth consecutive postseason, the Cleveland Cavaliers will take on the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. The rosters have changed a bit since the first time we saw this matchup, but the crust of the storyline is the same. Lebron James will try to beat what is perceived to be a superior team, with a high chance of failure, and I won’t be watching.
Many predicted that this is how the season would go, so I’m sure that they feel vindicated today, but our path to this result just feels wrong. At different points throughout the season, Golden State seemed disengaged, seemingly sleepwalking their way to 58 regular season wins and the Western Conference’s second seed. Cleveland looked considerably worse dropping many winnable games with a porous defense. Lebron appeared ready to pack his bags, so much so, that the GM saw fit to trade nearly half of the roster at the trading deadline. In each conference finals, it took seven games and key injuries to the opponent (CP3, Irving, Hayward) to get a victor.
This isn’t to say this series will hold no merit. Lebron will try to add to his growing mythology and the Warriors will continue working to earn their spot as an all-time team. I’ve personally lost interest in both narratives, especially since it came at the cost of something fresh (a Finals berth for Houston or Boston). Maybe we’ll get it next season, the next time I tune into a game. I’m passing on the Finals out of disinterest and there’s no way I’ll watch… unless it’s through a sports app, twitter, or my fingers. Here we go again.
