We Out: Japan - Robot Restaurant
The GUNNERPHI crew made it to Japan. In the six-part miniseries “We Out: Japan”, we’ll be documenting our big trip overseas including video, music, and photos from Clifford S. Coleman. We out!
Nightlife can say a lot about a city, and we were eager to see what Tokyo’s after dark activities were like.
There was a considerable amount of buzz surrounding the Robot Restaurant in downtown. We had to make reservations ahead of time, as the event is known to sell out far ahead of the show dates.
Upon entering, we waited in a large bar area with live music. A local singer covered some American tunes while we got the chance to order refreshments. When we all filed into the hall, visitors were seated on either side of a wide aisle. What happened after that is hard to explain (that could be because we don’t speak Japanese). We saw a large cast, mount makeshift animals and tanks while donning masks, singing, dancing, and playing an assortment of instruments.
With the language barrier, it was hard to tell if the songs were meant to stand independently or were part of some larger narrative. Either way, the combination of music and lights made it hard to look away.
The Robot Restaurant is an entertaining way to start a night in Tokyo and it puts you in short walking distance of clubs, lounges, arcades, and more traditional restaurants.
