The next big talent is closer than you think. It could be passing you in traffic, in front of you in line at the supermarket, or on the next treadmill at the gym. Or what if I told you she was still in a high school classroom every Monday through Friday?

Meet Melody B. The aptly-named, songstress resides in South Florida and has plans for the game.

Singing in church and school choirs as a kid eventually turned into talent shows at South Broward High and 103.5 The Beat’s Teen Open Mic. The latter granted her exposure and opportunities to really show people how special her voice was.

Her earliest memories include singing and trying to copy the music that her parents played. She mentions Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande as major influences. Singing was really just a hobby until she posted a video of a cover she did in middle school.

Therein lies the beauty of this era. A video that was done for fun became a pivotal moment. It brought her hundreds of thousands of viewers, and built the foundation for the following that Melody has today. “It wasn’t even that good,” starts Melody, “ it just blew up so I got thousands of followers off of that”. Before she knew it, she had many new listeners and a legitimate platform to show off her skills.

But the internet is a double-edged sword, and there can be detractors to combat even the most die-hard fans. That Instagram account with the viral singing video was hacked, and Melody had to begin her social media outreach from scratch. She’s begun the process and has regained a couple thousand followers along the way.

“I just consistently post videos, every time I post a cover my followers go up and up and up. That really helps to be honest. I noticed what kind of content does the best, I try to push out as much of that as I can, singing videos are the number one thing that people love”

Though she first gained notoriety for a song cover, she’s been drawing from her own personal experiences to write original songs for years. She manages all of this on her own. She’s built a significant following once and she’s confident that she’ll do it again, but every move is calculated even down to her outfits.

“I’m really into fashion as well. So I also do promotions for clothing. In the future I want to have my own clothing brand or my own Jordan shoe. I think that’s so cool. I have to be looking up to the part.”

Like many other artists, the current COVID-19 pandemic has put a hold on her work, but it hasn’t stopped her creativity. As it stands, she doesn’t like to rush music or its release. She’s dropping a new single soon, and hopes to shoot a video for it when the quarantine is lifted in her area. There are still plans for a tour this year with the Canadian artist development organization, Talent Nation.

It’s important to remember that she’s still a kid and there’s so much room for her career to grow. She’ll graduate with the class of 2021 and has ambitions of going to college and moving to Los Angeles some day. They say that people with a unique perspective march to the beat of their own drum. In this case, she’s just singing to the tune of her own melody.
